The Flame Queen One of the globe’s most famous opal nodules displays an amazing bullseye effect, due to a second layer of precious opaline gel that later filled the nodule’s centre whose spheres are of somewhat different sizes, making them act differently in response to light. These stones are called eye of opal. The second image features the same opal turned at a different angle, showing a different set of colors in inclined light. The gem weighs 263.18 carats (nearly 53 grams) and measures 7x6.3x1.2cm. It was discovered at Lightning Ridge in Australia a century ago. LozImage credit: David Plane -- source link
