anightvaleintern:faisdm:ultigom:gastrophobia:Good riddance to bad rape jokes.Oh yes, and I’m sure bullying the artist into taking it down, was the best thing you could do to tackle rape culture. There are actual people on the internet, that would comment and grade a person on how good at sex they would be and then talk about how they would rape them.May I let you know that Furaffinty hired an admin a few days ago, who has had a past of sexual assault, and when the person who hired him was asked to comment on it, they said “what he did was not rape”, and then they banned anyone who said otherwise. If you really have the time to oppress an artist for making an ask blog about a princess horse, that enjoys eating cake and having sex, surely you would have the time to make people aware of actual troubling things within the many societies this world holds, and help them improve on it, rather than rant and rave all day about how nothing is done about it.Woah. Stop.Let’s be clear about the facts here. The ‘AskPrincessMolestia’ blog was not ‘bullied into being taken down’. It was ordered to be taken down by Hasbro. Why? Oh let’s see? Maybe because it was a blog dedicated to making rape jokes about characters from a series made for little girls?Hasbro have been remarkably supportive and tolerant of the Bronies, their peripheral demographic, but when there is a high possibility that your main demographic of little girls, when googling their favourite show will come across content about Celestia wanting to grope or peek in on characters, it’s a serious problem for the brand image, harmful to how the character and show are perceived and dilutes the show’s intended message; that people should be treated with kindness and respect. Not to mention that Bronies have been stalking and harassing voice actresses from the series, so it’s unsurprising the suits are going to want to step in!There is a difference between sex positivity and molestation. You are arguing that Molestia “enjoys eating cake and having sex”, okay, yes, there is nothing wrong with either of those two things; there is nothing wrong with having sex, enjoying sex or talking about sex! The problem is that Molestia isn’t a horse who just likes having sex, she is a horse who likes talking about having non consensual sex and sexually harassing others. A brief perusal of some of the Molestia posts archived on KYM and I found: Molestia sneaking up on and pinching the buttocks of unsuspecting ponies going about their daily lives, Molestia using a magic beam shot from her horn to rape unsuspecting pegasi up in the clouds, Molestia peeking in on two ponies about to have sex, and Molestia collecting photos of Fluttershy’s bum taken while she was asleep. I only found one or two Molestia examples that depicted possibly consensual behaviour with other characters, but there was not enough evidence for me to say if they were consensual kinky behaviour or something far less pleasant since the relationship seemed kind of abusive both physically and emotionally. Given the other examples I saw, however, it is impossible to deny that Molestia definitely did some horrible things for which there was absolutely not consent from the other characters.I was bullied in school by some guys who thought it was hilarious to pinch my buttocks while I was walking around between classes, on one occasion grabbing me between classes and kissing me full on the mouth in front of onlookers (the bully being a foot taller than me there was nothing I could do), and it wasn’t fun, it was only funny to people who thought it was funny to see me powerless and with my dignity hurt, it was not because they liked sex, it was because they wanted to show dominance over me, to put me in a vulnerable position and upset me and to have people see me knocked down a peg; it was sexual harassment and it’s not okay to do that; to treat people’s bodies as something you can just act on against their will! Nor is it okay to make jokes that normalise and make light of such behaviour, especially when the jokes are coming from a character little girls are supposed to look up to and emulate! Before anybody calls me a joyless bitch, I have absolutely no problem with the similar but less awful meme, ‘Trollestia’, which points out the many circumstances in the series in which Celestia seems to deliberately complicate situations or avoids stepping in with her powers to solve situations she could easily resolve and makes Twilight and friends’ lives more difficult and acts amused by the results; that is a funny meme because it stems from the actual character and doesn’t glorify sexual violence or exploitation. Celestia does troll her subjects sometimes, but it’s always to teach them something valuable rather than to hurt or demean them.As for tackling real problems? I’d say that casual sexual harassment of women for doing nothing but just existing, going to work, going to school or having fun, and making jokes that normalise this mindset, is a pretty real problem. Sexual harassment in school had an extremely negative effect on my life and development, making me feel that I was weird for not being interested in boys and deserved to be teased and molested for not seeking out their attention, that for not enjoying it I was not normal, or a “frigid freak” with no sense of humour, as they put it. It took years for me to come to terms with the fact that I was just a lesbian and that I could enjoy intimate behaviour with a consenting partner as something other than a weapon used to harm my dignity by people who decided they didn’t like me. I was a victim of sexual harassment because of a culture that thinks sexual harassment is funny, and Princess Molestia was a meme which encouraged and normalised the belief that sexual harassment, especially against people who show no interest in sex, is funny and harmless and something they say they don’t want but actually enjoy- some horrible, creepy ideas there. One little blog may not seem like a big issue, but if it’s contributing towards bigger problems; women being harassed at cons for cosplaying, voice actresses being stalked, objectification of women in advertising and media, sexual violence and harassment not being taken seriously or reported etc. and those problems are contributing towards big problems; victim blaming, rape culture, violence against women… Yeah, it IS important to treat this kind of thing seriously. Small changes like this add up and help us to tackle the big problems.*slowclap*Also I want to re-emphasize the point that the artist did not take their own blog down because they were “bullied” but because Hasbro issued a cease and desist. They are within their rights to do so for any fanart. They could tell me to take down my artwork of the ponies even but I suppose they don’t have interest because if a 6 year old girl saw my artwork it would. Just be another tasteful mlp pic.(I actually sell quite a few kid sized shirts on RB, so cute.)But my point is, if Hasbro ordered this blog shut down but not others, maybe it’s because this blog was actually harmful to the audience and the brand.Something bronies need to understand. -- source link
