“He’s only playing. He’s only playing. He won’t hurt me. He’s only playing.” There are a lot of rules in the lab. One of these is that Tony’s not supposed to let Eberard out of his room during the night when he’s there with him alone, or be in Eberard’s room with him. This is meant to be because Eberard is very big and very strong, and although Tony and the others know very well that he’d never want to hurt anybody intentionally, every now and then, he’s a little bit flaky. If he forgets where - or when - he is, could easily hurt somebody by accident, and if Tony’s in the room with him, by himself, when it happens, it’s going to be bad news for everyone. It’s a rule that Tony has largely disregarded for the last few years. Eberard’s much more stable than he used to be, and he gets so upset if he’s stuck in his room by himself all night. Tony’s become his very best friend, and although rules are rules, he’s much happier and healthier if he’s spent the night talking or playing games or watching movies instead. Nobody’s regretted it yet. Another rather important rule is that there should be no horseplay, ever, under any circumstances. None. For much the same reasons as the ones behind the first rule, no one is ever to playfight with Eberard, or encourage him to play roughly. Tony’s actually been pretty good with that one, but he forgot it tonight, and now he’s wondering if he really is going to regret it. Perhaps somewhat mercifully, Eb seems happy enough; he’s smiling, he isn’t getting fluffy, and there’s no sign of that telltale thousand yard stare that he tends to get on when he’s losing himself. He’s just playing, that’s all. He’s just playing.Over the years, though, Tony had forgotten just how big Eberard really is, though. It’s a very sudden and jarring reminder of just how great a risk he’s taking every time he ‘forgets’ the rules. Then again, they do say that there’s nothing quite like putting your head in a lion’s mouth. *There’ll be more of this later, and I’ll probably colour it if I’ve got the time/energy. So yeah, look forward to more of Eberard being unintentionally terrifying. -- source link
