Allegory of Faith (c.1634). Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) (Italian, 1591–1666). Oil on canvas. Pushkin Museum.Faith (Latin Fides) is one of the three most important Christian virtues along with Hope (Speranza) and Love (Charity, Caritas). In accordance with the iconographic tradition, it is presented in the guise of a woman with traditional attributes: in her right hand she holds a bowl over which a round wafer is visible - symbols of the Holy Communion, and the left hand touches the chest - a gesture characteristic of this type of image. -- source link
