I was finally able to get a female widow skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) to pose for me on Snake Hill yesterday. Dragonflies are terribly skittish and uncooperative, but every once in awhile, one will take a sitting for a portrait. They have such a gorgeous symmetry to them. The female widow skimmer has a broad brown stripe surrounded by smaller gold ones on her abdomen. The male has a waxy blue-white thorax and abdomen. Both sexes have black banding on their wings, but the male develops additional blue-white banding as it matures. -- source link
