storytime-reviews:Shelf-Confidence Book Photo ChallengeJuly 2, 2018 – Road TripAs a classics student and ancient history lover I have been meaning to read this book for ages and finally got around to buying it! I haven’t read it yet, but I am looking forward to learning all about the changing regions of power throughout world history. I am especially interested because it purports to be better than the Eurocentric views of history we are used to, and to demonstrate how different cultures influenced each other. I’m about halfway through this (through the premodern period) and it’s good! It’s well-written, engagingly presented, and impressively well-researched and -footnoted. (It’s a pet peeve of mine when histories for the general market lose their footnotes.) Frankopan is unfair to medieval Europe – it was neither static nor isolated, as he maintains – but the book as a whole is intelligent and trenchant, and often revelatory. Specialists in Asian history might have more nuanced critiques, but I’ve been impressed. -- source link
