ON THIS DAY: JULY 24/25Natural disasters have occurred throughout the ages, from the earliest years of Earth’s history. Although many prehistoric natural disasters have gone unrecorded, there is an outstanding number of natural disasters that have found their place into our history books, gleaned from eyewitness reports, early religious and historical literature, and evidence revealed by modern-day scientists. Throughout each month I will be sharing “On this day” posts about past geological events and natural disasters in history. If you know of any, then please post in the comments. On this day: July 24, 2006FLOODS, INDIA BANGLADESHIn Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, was threatened by rising floodwaters, while the death toll in India’s devastating floods rose sharply when 139 bodies were washed up in eastern India. The combined death toll in both countries rose to above 700, with about 500 fatalities in India. Rivers around Dhaka burst their banks, leaving 40 percent of the city of 10 million people under water. On this day: July 25, 2005FLOOD INDIAThe heaviest rainfall for over 100 years caused massive flooding in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Goa, bringing transport to a halt, washing away property, and causing over 1,400 deaths. Mumbai recorded 37 inches (940 mm) of rain in 24 hours and, as the city’s drainage system failed, sewage contaminated drinking water supplies, resulting in outbreaks of disease.~ JMImage Credit: http://1.usa.gov/1I7x14yMore Info:2006 Flood, http://1.usa.gov/1I7x14y2005 Flood, http://bit.ly/1MeZRRU -- source link
