Prior to any conservation treatment, a thorough examination must take place to fully understand an object’s materials and their condition. The history of the object sometimes presents difficult questions at this stage: for example, if ritual use is responsible for changing an object’s condition, is there a way to both restore the appearance of the original craftsmanship and preserve evidence of the ritual? A Nepalese Standing Vishnu statue recently raised this question as it was prepared for the reopening of the Arts of Asia galleries (check out the stunning, newly reopened Arts of Korea gallery as a preview).Questions like this don’t always have a straightforward answer. The Brooklyn Museum conservation department encourages an atmosphere of collaboration, in which conservators regularly share their ideas and expertise with each other and discuss options with curatorial staff in coming up with a plan. Sometimes four heads are better than one when it comes to determining the best treatment approach for an object!Posted by Jessica Ford -- source link
