I grew up in a small town so it has never been a challenge for me to live in a rural setting. However, working here over the past two months has renewed my appreciation for rural life and medicine. There is something very satisfying about the lifestyle and being so close to nature. Some of the sights I have seen and the people I have met have humbled me. There is a sincerity and honesty to how people interact with you. Gone is the busy and complicated headaches of the big city. Everything moves slower here. Life is simpler. However, that is not to say that the medicine is any less complex. Sometimes it is more so. Everyone knows everyone. It can be particularly hard to see patients decompensate. They are not just people you see in the office or at the hospital. These are people that you know personally at the grocer, the sport team, or your neighbour. The roots that sprout here form the bonds that are stronger than any you might see in a more populous area. It makes that therapeutic relationship so much more meaningful, but also harder to compartmentalize when people get sick. Being here has again humanized medicine for me, and that is something I will never forget. -- source link
