Members of the Women’s Voluntary Service run a mobile canteen inLondon (England, 1941):At 5:30am, Patience “Boo” Brand and Rachel Bingham carry trays oftea and buns to shelterers who have been unable to visit the canteen. Many of the elderly in the trench shelter are too infirm to comeout, and other shelterers are scared of the noise of the blitzoverhead. The two women distribute tea and buns to ladies sheltering in atrench shelter in a London park. The ladies have made the sheltermore comfortable by bringing chairs, tables and lamps from home.Rachel scrubs the floor of the WVS canteen on her return to theCanteen Service depot. The original caption states that Rachelhadn’t had to scrub a floor before she joined the WVS, as she waspart of “Society” and had a maid to do it for her. Thisdemonstrates that all parts of society were volunteering for the WVS.Having returned to the depot and cleaned the canteen, Boo loads a teaurn into the smaller tea car, in preparation for a call to anotherlocation somewhere in London. It is now 8am.Rachel sets up mugs ready to start selling cups of tea and buns topeople who clear up damage and debris in this bombed area of London. Boo stands behind her, in front of the tea car, where a counter hasbeen set up.Rachel counts out the change for a man buying a cup of tea and a bunfrom a WVS tea car. Boo stands behind the counter, waiting to dealwith the next person in the queue. These men were previouslyunemployed, but have now found work helping to clear up the rubbleand debris caused by an air raid to this area of London.Rachel serves tea from the back of her WVS tea car.Boo reaches into a compartment in the WVS tea car to get a packet ofcigarettes for one of the men in the queue. -- source link
