unwillingadventurer:Two great moments that show Ian and Barbara playing to their strengths. Not bad for two people who didn’t want to travel! Barbara’s growth from the unwilling adventurer in ‘the Daleks’ to playing this role of a god during the Aztec period is fantastic. The way she keeps her cool when Tlotoxl questions her divinity. And Ian, how he uses his intelligence to aid him against people physically stronger than himself. He is so capable and a quick learner, and very level headed in this story. What we love about the First era (Particularly the first two seasons) is that this was an ensemble piece. Sure the Doctor was the lead, the star name of the show, but the programme wasn’t about him on his own, it was about all four of them. Some people criticise One for being useless early on and his companions doing everything. This shouldn’t be a criticism, this era played a lot more with the team dynamic, the idea of separating them and giving them individual story lines. This made it so fresh and gave it so much more scope. They really were all so well written that they could carry entire episodes without the Doctor if need be, or not in one scene with another lead. It followed each of their paths, and showed how the Doctor impacted their lives, as well as how they impact his.Just because its called Doctor Who, doesn’t mean he’s the most important. Ian and Barbara are us, they are the regular people dragged into the unknown and into the adventure. We need them to be as much of the story as the Doctor. The ensemble drama really brings so much to episodes and allows for lots of different relationships to form. -- source link
