The travellers explore their new environment, unaware that the planet is highly radioactive. While exploring an empty, wartorn city they come into contact with the Daleks, horrific mutated monsters that pilot their own portable tanks. Time is running out as the travellers succumb to the radiation. Their only hope is getting the pacifist Thal natives to take up arms and fight!STORY FACTS ~Introduces the Daleks, their home planet Skaro and the Thals. It features the First Doctor and Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton and Susan Foreman as the companions.In this story, the Doctor has never heard of the Daleks, never been to Skaro and the Daleks don’t know who he is either.Interestingly, the moral of this story is “fight and kill if you have to!” The Doctor teaches the pacifist natives that killing is very often justified. This perhaps shows the Doctor’s youthful, angry nature which changes over the series.The story continues the “kidnap” arc, where the relationship between the Doctor and his new companions is very strained.Barbara has a romance with the Ganatus, the Thal and they share the first kiss in Doctor Who.
