This is the first piece you see when you enter the current exhibit on display at the Vancouver Art Gallery (where I spent the afternoon on Boxing Day), titled “Unscrolled: Reframing Tradition in Chinese Contemporary Art”. At first glance, it looks like a traditional Chinese landscape painting; but then you walk around to the backside and realize that it’s actually composed of all kinds of random materials – plastic bags, pine needles, rope, cardboard, paper, gatorade bottles – carefully arranged in a backlit box to create the traditional ink-painting facade. Also currently on display at the museum is “The Forbidden City: Inside the Court of China’s Emperors”, the largest collection of Chinese imperial objects ever to travel overseas, beautifully curated to touch upon every major facet of life behind the palace walls. It’s an awesome look at several centuries of Chinese dynastic culture and history. I’ve actually visited the Palace Museum in Beijing (i.e. “The Forbidden City”) three times and honestly I learned just as much from this exhibit as I did when I was actually there because of the high curatorial quality. -- source link
