A Horror Film Reenactment: The ‘Scream’ Murder of Cassie Jo StoddartDuring the evening of 22nd September 2006, 16-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart headed over to her aunt and uncle’s home in a remote area of Bannock County, Idaho. Her relatives were going away for the night and had asked Cassie to look after the house. Wanting some company, she was joined at the house by her boyfriend, Matt Beckham, at around 6pm.Later that evening, two classmates named Brian Draper (16) and Torey Adamcik (16) also turned up at the house and they all settled down to watch a movie together. However, before the film ended, Brian and Torey announced they were leaving to attend a local movie theatre. The four friends said their goodbyes, and the two boys left. However, unbeknownst to Cassie and Matt, Brian and Torey had unlocked the basement door on their way out.A short while later, Brian and Torey returned wearing dark outfits and masks, and they snuck into the basement through the unlocked door. Brian was obsessed with the Columbine massacre and Torey was a big fan of the movie Scream, and so they were eager to recreate their own horror scene. While Matt and Cassie watched TV, Brian and Torey began making loud noises in an attempt to lure their friends into the basement. When that failed to attract them, they instead cut the power. With the lights frequently cutting out, Cassie began to feel uneasy, which was worsened by the fact the family’s dog was constantly growling at the basement door. Matt called his mother and asked if he could remain at the house with Cassie for the night, so that she felt safer. Matt’s mother denied his request, but said that Cassie was welcome to stay at their home and offered to drop her back off at her aunt and uncle’s house the next morning. Cassie turned down this offer, as she did not want to leave the pets unattended. At approximately 10:30pm, Matt returned home and Cassie was left alone. After hearing Matt leave, Brian and Torey began to terrorise Cassie further. They turned the power off and on again in the hopes of luring her to the basement, but without success. Instead, Cassie had remained on the sofa scared and in darkness, in the hopes that she would fall asleep and everything would be back to normal the next day. Sadly, however, Cassie did not live to see the morning’s light. Eventually, the two boys grew bored of waiting and quietly went upstairs armed with knives. They began slamming doors to terrify their friend even more, and at this point their behaviour transgressed into brutal murder. They attacked Cassie and viciously inflicted up to 30 stab wounds all over her body, 12 of these being considered fatal. The boys had documented their murderous plans in a series of videos, which even included footage of Cassie on the day of her death (shown above). In a video filmed on 21st September 2006 - one day before the murder - Draper and Adamcik are overheard discussing Cassie as their chosen victim:Brian: “We found our victim and, sad as it may be, she’s our friend. But you know what? We all have to make sacrifices. Our first victim is going to be Cassie Stoddart. She’s gonna be alone in a big, dark house out in the middle of nowhere. How perfect can you get!?”Torey: “I’m horny just thinking about.”When Cassie’s relatives returned home to days later, her body was discovered by her 13-year-old cousin. Police spoke with Matt Beckham, who informed them that Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik had also been at the house the night. Three days later, Cassie’s killers were arrested. During questioning, each boy blamed the other, and it was Draper who led authorities to the location where they disposed of the murder weapons and clothing. In August 2007, Draper and Adamcik each received a compulsory life sentence without the possibility of parole and they both remain imprisoned at Idaho State Correctional Institution. However, a Supreme Court ruling in 2016 established that any life without parole sentences handed down in juvenile cases are deemed unconstitutional. The new legislation states that adolescent brain immaturity means that children who commit crimes are capable of change in their adult years. This ruling is being applied retroactively, which means that Draper and Adamcik are among the approximate 1500 cases up for reconsideration. -- source link
