“I’ve got Wes, he’ll walk me back. It’ll be fine.”
“I’ve got Wes, he’ll walk me back. It’ll be fine.”On 18th September 2019, 20-year-old Keeley Bunker was enjoying a night out with two friends - Monique Riggon and Wesley Streete - at Snobs nightclub in Birmingham, UK, to celebrate her recent birthday. As time passed later into the night, Keeley (pictured top) decided she should head home and get some rest; she had an interview scheduled the next day for her dream job working with children, and she did not want to jeopardise her chances. The three friends left the club and took a taxi back to their nearby home town of Tamworth, and once there they decided to walk the rest of the way. They firstly reached Monique’s house. By now it was around 3am, and a concerned Monique asked Keeley to stay over so that she did not have to make her way home alone. However, Keeley replied: “I’ve got Wes, he’ll walk me back. It’ll be fine.” Considering that Keeley had been friends with Wes since childhood and trusted him undoubtedly, there was not a second thought. Monique said her goodbyes and went inside, and Keeley and Wes set off to walk the rest of the route home together. The following day, Keeley’s father reported her missing. She had not returned home and had missed her job interview, and she was also not responding to any of her family’s panicked phone calls. Social media posts were created by her mother in an effort to locate her and a search party was formed. Keeley’s uncle - Jason Brown - joined the search at a large local park, where he encountered Wesley Streete (pictured bottom). They spoke briefly, and Wes informed him that he had last seen Keeley near to the park before they finally departed ways. Within hours of this conversation, Jason made the horrifying discovery of his niece’s body in this same park, lying face down in a stream.Keeley’s body had been left partially nude from the waist below and covered with branches. Upon discovery, it was obvious that she had been sexually assaulted and purposefully concealed. Wesley Streete was arrested on suspicion of rape and murder. Following the arrest, one police officer asked Streete how he felt, to which he replied “a bit sad”. Streete was also overheard telling police officers “I just feel like you’re blaming me.” After his apprehension, Streete lied continuously and changed his story a total of four times during the course of the murder investigation. He initially claimed he had left Keeley to walk home alone when they reached the park, and then later changed his story to say that he had accidentally killed her during consensual sex - the latter being the version of events which he stuck with during the trial. The reality was that Streete had a history of unwanted sexual contact with young girls, one victim being below the UK legal age of consent, but this information only emerged after Keeley’s death. With these details, the true version of events began to emerge. Streete had walked Keeley home that night and attempted to initiate sexual contact with her. When Keeley refuted his advances, he overpowered her and raped her. During the ordeal, he began crushing her neck with his arm, and although Keeley had tried to fight back, she eventually lost consciousness and died due to restricted airflow. Streete then disposed of her body, returned home and slept before joining the search for his missing friend the next day.For the rape and murder of Keeley Bunker, and also for six other separate charges of rape and sexual assault, Wesley Streete was sentenced to spend a minimum term of 30 years in prison. -- source link
