tlatollotl: willoftzeentch: tlatollotl: danbensen: tlatollotl: tlatollotl: dapart: RItual group from West Mexico, Jalisco culture (100 BCE-300 CE). Sketched at the museum. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I FUCKING LOVE THIS Here is the piece from the de Young Museum https://art.famsf.org/platform-ritual-group-2009127 What’s the man in the center holding up to his mouth? I’m not sure, the model isn’t detailed enough to make out. It could be a flute, could be a cigar or pipe, could be a tamale, could even be a drinking straw. Though there isn’t a vessel below the person like there are in other models with possible drinking straws. I’m also not entirely sure that the figure holding the object is a man. It’s the only one without shoulder bumps, but it’s chest still kind of looks like it could have breasts. It’s hard to tell at this angle. Maybe @dapart could chime in since they saw this piece in person? About the shoulder bumps: how would those be created? I saw this piece before in an art history course but I’d assumed the shoulder bumps were on some kind of shoulder pad, not just part of their skin. Were they a form of raised scar from a scarification? Would they embed something under the skin to make the bumps? Did only women go through this body modification? My understanding is that you pick at the skin using a needle or something similar like a maguey spine. You pick at it, let it heal, pick at it, let it heal, etc. Until a raised scar is formed on the skin. Check out the Wiki article on scarification, it’s truly a fascinating subject. They don’t mention the picking and healing that I did and maybe I’m wrong about that. But they do talk about packing where an inert material is placed under the skin. So it’s possible those bumps could also be formed by an object embedded in the skin, though no pellets of clay or stone have been found by the shoulders of remains in shaft tombs. -- source link
