Happy #Caturday from the Brooklyn Museum! This is a monthly celebration of cats based on our exhibition Divine Felines: Cats in Ancient Egypt.Bes isone of the most wonderful and weirdest gods in ancient Egypt. He doesn’t evenlook Egyptian! Unlike most other deities in this pantheon, his face and bodyare neither human nor animal – they are both. While he appears to be mostlylike a man, his large, round ears and facial folds seem to belong to a snarlinglion. His bowed legs and tail are reminiscent of a cat standing on its hindpaws.Thefeline features attest to his ferocious power that can assure protection duringvery dangerous circumstances. The Egyptians believed that we are mostvulnerable during points of transition - like from life to death, or from fetusand newborn. Appropriately, Bes was popularly worshipped as protector of womenand infants, and as a facilitator of fertility. See Bes and other ancient Egyptian cats on view now in #DivineFelines!Posted by Yekaterina Barbash -- source link
