Indian calendar ad for the Burmah-Shell Oil company, 1939. The image in the center shows Krishna punishing the cobra Kaliya. Burma was one of the first nations to discover and market petroleum, between the 1850s and 1880s (beginning before 1859 the Titusville, PA oil strike, which is often seen as the beginning of the era of oil). When the British invaded in 1885, they deposed the last king of Burma and created Burmah-Shell, which exported Burmese oil to the world market. -- source link
