I’d been waiting for this one for quite some time. Tricky to find in the UK I was delighted to finally find a cheap copy in the States that would ship across the pond. It arrived this morning and all the things I’d been planning to do got thrown out of the window, with the intention of binge reading the whole thing instead. That’s a plan that didn’t entirely work out. There’s simply too much here to binge read. Not in terms of volume, its an average sized paperback, but in the breadth and depth of it. Repeatedly I’ve had to stop and walk away just to think about what I’ve been reading. Yvonne Fern has her head screwed on and presents the material “as is - Gene Roddenberry’s personal insights and comments, not a biography drawing on multiple sources. I’m not Roddenberry worshipper - as Yvonne Fern points out in the foreword, too many people have given too many cases of him in a negative light for it to be untrue - but this insight into the man at the end of his life is nevertheless hugely valuable. There really is so much here to think about and I’m only at the end of chapter 1. I won’t be rushing through the rest. This is a book that needs time to contemplate. I am profoundly excited to read more. Also I’m thinking that “old guy playing with Starship model” is both my new aesthetic and a life goal. -- source link
