Happy birthday to William Penn! Born in 1644, this Englishman made his way to America where he eventually established the Province of Pennsylvania on land given to his father by King Charles II. He was an early proponent of religious freedom, other forms of equality, and (due to his conversion to Quakerism) pacifism.
