Houses on Olyokminsk Hill (Siberia, 2009).Olyokminsk was founded by the Cossack Petr Beketov in 1635, on theleft bank of the Lena River, and opposite the mouth of the OlyokmaRiver. The ostrog (fortress) was later moved a few kilometresupstream, so there would be less chance of flooding in spring. Olyokminsk was the base for Russian operations further east, eventually becoming a trade centre on the river route to Yakutsk. Itwas granted town status in 1738. -- source link
