Residents of Anadyr (Russia, summer 1906). The town was calledNovo-Mariinsk until 1923.The people are wearing a mixture of native, Russian and westernclothing. In front, on the right, are four seated women wearingChukchi dress. Behind them is a man wearing dark-coloured,American-style clothing. In the middle of the picture is a group of five men, two women, ateenaged or pre-teen boy, and four young children. They appear to beSiberian natives or Métis in Russian dress – the men wear mostlymilitary-style cloth coats and caps, and the women wear scarves. In the centre of this group (behind the children and in front of thebuilding) is a taller man with a moustache, wearing a Russian-stylefur hat. Behind him, a tall thin man stands in the doorway of thebuilding, wearing a military-style cap.To the left, standing in front, are two men – one with a (possiblyfur) overcoat and military-style cap; the other (slightly shorterthan the first) wearing a short, belted cloth coat and ashort-brimmed cap.The man standing furthest to the left is wearing Chukchi dress with awestern-style hat. A small boy is peeking out from behind him.The building has a peaked roof with a ridge along its length, and aframed door at the end. There appears to be a lintel or beam in thewall (at about head-height). The walls may be made of sod. The roofis covered in some flexible material (possibly a tarp), but is notmade of overlapping walrus skins like for yarangas. The peak of theroof is rounded, which suggests that the tarp is spread over sod orthatch. -- source link
