A river on a glacierThis photo of East Greenland’s Violin Glacier, taken by NASA’s Icebridge program, captures something really cool; channels on top of the glacier. Those channels mark places where water flowed across the glacier’s surface, melting ice as they meandered their way across. The meandering nature of the channels suggests that they probably started flowing on layers composed of packed snow and ate their way downwards until they reached harder ice, at which point their shapes became locked in.It’s only April and melt season hasn’t started yet this year, so those channels must have been cut during previous summers. Most likely they fed water from higher ground to the coastline in the distance last year and the snowfall during the winter wasn’t sufficient to fully bury them.-JBBDear Readers,Most of our posts are not reaching you in your news feed due to facebook’s filtering system.
