Pressure ridges over sea ice at Scott Base, Antarctica Satellite monitoring of Antarctica and the Arctic ice cap was the job of ICESat-1, which was decommissioned in 2009. ICESat-2 will launch in 2016. To plug the gap Operation IceBridge is NASA’s airborne monitoring mission to chart polar ice conditions. One of the project scientists on IceBridge, Michael Studinger, took this photo of a multi-layer lenticular cloud over Mount Discovery, Antarctica, last month. In the foreground a pressure ridge of bulging sea ice throws shards of ice pointing skywards. ~SATR A blog of the campaign is maintained here:http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/fromthefield/category/icebridge-antarctic-2013/ and more details of this particular shot can be found here:http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=82499 -- source link
