NEW ISLAND ERUPTIONWhile Hawaii, Fiji, and the Bahamas are a blast, a new island-lover destination may have just erupted. In the Pacific Ocean, to the Southeast of infamous Fiji, sits the Kingdom of Tonga. The capital of Tonga is Nuku’alofa. In January, an underwater volcano about 65 kilometers southwest of this oddly-named capital erupted, beginning the formation of a new island. This month (March, 2015), an area hotel owner, GP Orbassano, traveled with a friend and his son to this newly formed island. Although a non-professional photographer, Orbassano took breathtaking photos of the island from the boat and all parts of the island. This island, measuring 800m by 1.3 km, could serve as a new tourist destination due to its incredible scenery and proximity to the capital. Although Orbassano believes to have been the first to set foot on the island, he knows he won’t be the last. The three men hiked all around the island and reported that although the peak was difficult to reach, it was feasible. The fragile soil only required a moderate level of fitness to negotiate, Orbassano told ABC News. He is 63 years old and claims that reaching the top would be nothing for “the young fellow”.As a hotel owner, this new geographical addition could mean more business to Orbassano. However, he sees it more as a chance for new adventures for those who love the outdoors. “It’s not every day a new island appears in the middle of the ocean,” he says. If GP’s photographs give any justice to the beauty of the island in person, this island will provide an incredible experience for many outdoorsmen to come.-MikeABC News: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-11/tonga-newly-formed-volcanic-island-first-pictures/6301480For an earlier story from TES with more information: http://on.fb.me/1wZANd0.Photos courtesy of The Telegraph: http://bit.ly/1MB1Htl -- source link
