Jurassic tree fungusWe recently shared a couple of posts on the Cerro Quadrado petrified forest in Argentina and the fossil pine cones of a species related to monkey puzzle trees that lived in a forest covered and preserved by volcanic ash (see http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1UO5K4l and http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1UOeQ46). We referred to some specimens of fossil parasitic fungi found preserved in the tree trunks, recording part of a long vanished ecosystem, and here is a photo of a slice of trunk with the fungi picked out in different colour and texture of agate, derived from the silica in the volcanic ash as it was altered by mineralised groundwater during its geological jourmey to the present.
