Although Pierre Cardin’s career is marked by experimentation and innovation, one stylistic element that the designer revisited was the parabola, a U-shaped symmetrical curve. One of the first iterations of this unique design detail appears in Cardin’s 1957 collection. Referred to in the press as the “lasso” silhouette, fabric is draped from the collar or the waist to form dramatic cowls. From the 1960s onward, these parabolic design elements began to encircle the body, creating something akin to Saturn’s rings.
