fuckyeahgoodomens: How would you describe Good Omens? Tennant: It’s bonkers and unlike anything else. The apocalyptic and the mundane meet in this extraordinary way. Sheen: I read the book at drama school and loved it. It’s a brilliantly fantastical world with a crazy epic scale, but at its heart it’s about a simple, lovely relationship between an angel and a demon. There’s a particular English sense of humour too that comes out of the Hitchhiker’s Guide and Monty Python tradition. Tell us about your characters Tennant: Crowley is rather louche and enjoys life. He doesn’t lack self-confidence, but there's someone appealing under the snakeskin. But neither of them is as angelic or demonic as they claim to be - they are terribly human. Sheen: There’s something a little bit holier-than-thou about Aziraphale but the edges get knocked off him. He’d like to think he brings a sense of right and wrong to things, but actually he is just as ready to bend the rules as Crowley is. How do the two of them work together on their mission to stop the apocalypse? Tennant: It’s a buddy movie. They are yin and yang. Because they’ve both been on Earth for thousands of years they have become one another’s touchstone through the ages. Now they have this common goal of averting the apocalypse because they rather like the world. In particular, they like dining at The Ritz and this thing known as wine that humans have invented. Sheen: Yes, they complement and help each other perfectly. Aziraphale has been around people since the Garden of Eden and he has fallen in love with humanity. What was it like working with this incredible cast? Sheen: They were all great company. To just sit in my trailer hanging out with Miranda Richardson, Jack Whitehall, Anna Maxwell Martin and Jon Hamm drinking hot chocolate and watching old films was amazing. You both have a distinctive look in the show. Have you enjoyed that? Tennant: Crowley looks pretty rock ‘n’ roll. I wear these yellow contact lenses that transform my face and I like being a redhead too. Sheen: Our characters are meant to look extreme and different so Aziraphale’s hair is completely peroxide blond. But I don’t like my roots coming through! Aziraphale and Crowley drive around in a vintage Bentley. How did you find that? Tennant: Driving it gave me the heebie-jeebies because people kept telling me it was insured for nearly a million quid. So if the stuntman could drive the car I just let him. I didn’t want the responsibility. Sheen: I don’t know what was more nerve-racking, driving a car like that or being in it when David is driving, because he really threw it around with great gusto. Tennant: My father-in-law [Peter Davison] has just done a charming show [C4’s Great British Car Journeys] with him and Christopher Timothy driving round in old sports cars bickering… Sheen: There could be a series in that for us I think. .. -- source link
