fdrlibrary:“Sometime ago I told you and Mrs. Roosevelt a little about my confidential plans for a world flight.” — Amelia Earhart to Franklin D. Roosevelt, November 10, 1936.The Roosevelts met Amelia Earhart in 1932. The famous aviator and her husband/publicist George Putnam became friends and frequent guests both at the Roosevelt’s home in Hyde Park and at the White House. Eleanor Roosevelt even took an impromptu night ride from DC to Baltimore in Earhart’s plane following a dinner in 1933.As this letter shows, FDR helped Earhart prepare for her infamous 1937 attempt to circumnavigate the world. Roosevelt would later authorize one of the most extensive searches in Naval and State Department history following the pilot’s disappearance 77 years ago.Today is Amelia Earhart’s 117th birthday. -- source link
