zsl-edge-of-existence:While the numbat bears no relation to the true anteaters, a feature it shares with them is a long, sticky tongue used to catch insects. The numbat’s tongue can be up to 11 centimeters long, almost a third of its total body length, and it is designed to poke into small holes, leaf litter, and rotting wood in search of termites, which make up the entirety of the numbat’s diet. While the remains of ants have occasionally been found in the numbat’s feces, it’s likely they were consumed by accident. Numbats also have a number of rough ridges on the roof of its mouth for scraping termites off the tongue to be swallowed. -- source link
