WoolworthCompany to encourage a boycott of Jewish shops (Germany, March 1st,1933).Withindays of taking power, the Nazi propaganda minister Josef Göbbels hadarranged for a boycott of Jewish-owned businesses. He would explainin an speech on April 1stthat this was in retaliation for “atrocity propaganda” spread bythe “international Jewry” in newspapers overseas.Troopsof the Sturmabteilung (“Storm Detachment”) were ordered to standin front of Jewish shops, department stores and offices to intimidatecustomers. Large Stars of David were painted on storefronts, andpropaganda signs such as the above were displayed: “Germans, defendyourselves against Jewish atrocity and propaganda – buy only atGerman shops!”Peoplemostly ignored the boycott, and it only lasted a day. Göbbels, however, declared it a “great moral victory for Germany” in hisdiary.Despiteits lack of success, the boycott was the start of a series ofantisemitic laws. On April 7th,Jewish people were banned from civil service jobs, and by the end ofthe year there were new laws targeting Jewish lawyers, professors, journalists, doctors, dentists, artists, and other professionals.TheF.
