dalishious:GreedFall: Why I Don’t Care For Spiders’ Upcoming Fantasy Columbus Era Colonizer SimulatorSo apparently the anon that suggested I check out an upcoming video game called GreedFall was actually sincere in thinking I would enjoy it……I guess I need to actually explain why this was disturbing to me.First off, yes, it’s quite obvious to me that the asshole in this situation is the colonizer with the gun, hunting down and shooting the native person like an animal. But you know what’s apparent most people see, judging by the comments on the trailer other than those comparing it to other games? An opportunity to play out sick fantasies in killing Indigenous people. They’re not even reserved about it.The trailer makes it very clear who the protagonist is, and it’s not the woman fleeing for her life. It’s the man with the gun hunting her down. (This character is also the one all over their Social Media covers as well.) Which would explain why racists are find it so appealing. You can portray him as accurately brutal as you want, it doesn’t change the fact that this is yet another colonizing story from the colonizer’s perspective.Supposedly you can choose to side with or against the natives of the island, and that just leaves us with either a main character who’s a genocidal asshole or a White Saviour story, and we sure don’t have enough of those! //SarcasmSpeaking of tropes, there is also something to be said about the obvious Magical Native one, yet another overused trope that at this point is only contributing to the idea that we are fantastical and mythical, rather than real life people. There are ways to handle this trope well, but at least based on the limited amount I’ve read/seen of this game, I would not count it among them. The article linked above calls it “make-believe.” But this is not make believe. This is very much real life. The year is 2018 and I live in a country where Indigenous girls like myself are kidnapped, raped and murdered without repercussions, where Indigenous boys can be shot in the head and the murderers found not guilty by their fellow settlers, where the people in charge make promises of reconciliation and shake hands with our leaders while signing papers to push pipelines behind their backs. This is not “make-believe.” And if you think the media we consume does not have any effect on real life, then I’d like to direct you to a very well said sarcastic piece by Taika Waititi, right here. Because you’re wrong.Anyway, in response to the anon who sent me this in the first place: Yikes lmao try to understand why I would find this hurtful rather than call me obnoxious for feeling that way.EDIT: Yes, this is okay to reblog. -- source link
