Lee Ufan was born in 1939 in the south of Korea and raised by his Confucian grandfather. Lee has been honored by the government of Japan for having “contributed to the development of contemporary art in Japan. He advocates a methodology of de-westernization and de-modernization in both theory and practice as an antidote to the eurocentric thought of 1960s postwar Japanese society. Lee studied painting at the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University for just two months and, in 1956, moved to Yokohama, Japan, where he earned a degree in philosophy in 1961. Lee was also a pivotal figure in the Korean monochrome painting school, which offered a fresh approach to minimalist abstraction by presenting repetitive gestural marks as bodily records of time’s perpetual passage. Lee lives between Kamakura Japan and Paris France. -- source link
