Handmade history brings the past to life in a way that nomechanical method can match. For more than a hundred years Brooklyn artists,poets and dreamers have walked our streets – sketching, writing and wandering– re-inventing their surroundings with pen,pencil and brush. Examples of this can be seen in our current exhibit by Jean Michel Basquiat. Over the years, manyother residents of our city have filled sketchbooks and notebooks withdrawings, scribbles and script – all inspired by Brooklyn.The vivid notes and naturalillustrations can be found in the sketchbookof art student of Edith Forrester (c1886-1902) housed in #BKMLibrary Special Collections. Our Libraryalso preserves the work of James O’Connor – another localartist/explorer who filled his notebook withBrooklyn landmarks, architecture, interiors and street scenes.
