qsy-complains-a-lot: FP-45 Liberator pistolManufactured by General Motors Corp.’s Guide Lamp Division for $2.10 a piece c.1942, with a million pistol manufactured by workers who I presume wished they were working at the Inland division making M1 carbines - you really think that thing has a serial number ?.45ACP single shot pistol, 4″ long smoothbore barrel, stamped/rolled sheet steel construction, die-cast zinc breechblock/cocking piece, storage space inside the grip for extra rounds of ammunition. The FP-45 Liberator was manufactured for 11 weeks while masquerading as a flare pistol for secrecy, hence its name. As its nickname implies, it was meant to be mass dropped onto occupied countries during WW2 to equip Resistance fighters, which would give them a shitty firearm to get the drop on occupying troops and take their actual guns.Even though it was moreso intended as a psychological weapon, to boost the moral of underground fighters and scare the enemy, Allied commanders did not care for the plan and most Liberator pistols were scrapped or just dumped into the sea. -- source link
