bzork: ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.‘ That’s my mantra as I step out each morning onto the lot. I’m the best salesman in town, but that’s a precarious position to keep. So I’ve got to psych myself up, every day. I count the inventory first thing, and while I do, I whisper to myself. ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.’ I complete the circuit, and then it’s time to get suited up. Freshly pressed shirt. Buttons from the bottom up. ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.’ Watch. Blazer. Then comes that crucial moment when I flip my shirt collar up. Everything slows down and I’m alone with my thoughts. ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.’ I use the window of a car as a mirror, but I don’t need to. By the time I draw my rolled up tie out of my pocket, I’m on auto-pilot. The sound of silk against cotton. My eyes blinking. My head nodding. ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.’ At this point, I’ve been saying the words to myself for so long that, even though I’m mumbling them aloud, in my head it sounds like someone else’s voice. ‘In sales, you are always selling yourself.’ It has to be my own voice, especially given how comforting it is to listen to, but it sounds unfamiliar, like a stranger’s. Still, it feels as right as the knot tightening around my neck. I cinch up my tie, flip my collar down, and open my eyes. Animation returns to my face. My baby blues get their sparkle on, my lopsided grin makes an appearance. Bring on the customers. In sales, you are always selling yourself. And after my morning routine, I’m all ready to be owned. -- source link
