On this day in 1936, Edward VIII became King of England. He had one of the shortest reigns in English history, due to his abdication of the throne. Edward had fallen in love with American socialite Wallis Simpson, who had been previously married twice. Neither his government nor his Church approved of the match, forcing him to choose.
