magicmastered:alstee:divinethief:icyxmischief:fluturojdallandyshia:Thor: The Dark World (2013)Fuck all parents who use the “you should be grateful to me for giving you life” card to gaslight and emotionally abuse any of their children. Hello, yes, welcome to shitty parenting time with Odin!“I didn’t murder you, be grateful.”“I exterminated your entire people, be grateful.”This asshole is trying so hard to cling to the last vestiges of control he has over Loki. He’s just whipped out the pocket ace, declaring this shit in front of everyone. “Now they all know your dirty secret, and it’s your fault for upsetting me.”It’s abuse, plain and simple. And Loki soldiered on regardless.Did not let his Mother continue the gaslighting, though it broke his heart.Still did what he could to save Jane, Thor and Asgard.Saved Thor from who knows what kind of punishment awaited him upon returning home. Offered him the throne. Offered him whatever he wanted.Loki extended the empathy and freedom he was never granted in his entire life to Thor, the last real family he had left, even though he knew Thor would likely never understand him in return.^^^^This! Loki gave things to Thor that he’d never known himself. He gave things to Thor when he’d really never been given much himself at all. Think about it. People gave Thor their respect easily. Loki got none. Odin gave Thor a weapon. Loki got none. If Frigga hadn’t taught him magic—which presumably takes plenty more time to learn than a hammer, since the hammer is already there to work with whereas with magic you have to learn to make it appear first—he’d have nothing at all. Odin gave Thor most of his attention. Loki got none, or next to none. Sif, Heimdall, and the Warriors Three gave Thor their loyalty. Loki got none. When Loki does get something, even when it’s something Thor’s been (nearly) given, people are shocked and horrified. Odin was giving Thor the throne at first, and almost everyone was happy with that. When Frigga gave Loki the throne, Sif, Heimdall, and the Warriors Three all committed treason within three, four days. Thor gets love from everyone. By the time of TDW, Loki gets love from Frigga (and even she tries to manipulate him), and Thor objects to this (“Why indulge him?”) and Odin forbids it. No one in-universe ever expresses empathy for Loki, not for his self-hatred, not for his feelings of worthlessness, not for his desire for basic respect and acceptance. No one cares what he thinks or feels. They don’t care about his internalized racism, or emotional breakdown, or his suicide attempt, or his subsequent torture and coercion. None of them have the slightest concern for why he did what he did, or what his intentions were. They never show him any empathy. And yet, when he has the opportunity to pay them back for it, he doesn’t. From Odin’s throne, he could do anything to them. He could banish them, imprison them, execute them, and call it justice for their treason. He doesn’t. He shows them mercy. He frees Thor’s friends, who committed treason against him, who threatened to kill him, one of whom actually has tried to kill him. He releases Thor, who threatened to kill him, and followed Odin’s lead all his life, and gives Thor whatever he wants. Loki’s never really known freedom. First he was stuck in Odin and Thor’s shadows, trying to please them as best he could. Then he fell into Thanos’ hands. Then Odin locked him in a cell. Even at the end he can only move about and act freely wearing Odin’s face. And yet he grants this freedom that he’s never experienced to Thor.Loki’s capable of mercy and generosity even after all he’s been through (and all he’s done himself). It makes me wonder how Loki would’ve turned out without Odin’s influence. -- source link
