December 21 is winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It could very well be a chilly day, too, so we’re shivering along with William Rush’s allegorical sculpture Winter. Rush carved this figure from a single piece of pine wood and painted it grayish white to resemble marble. Winter’s first owner, a scientist named George W. Carpenter, originally displayed it outdoors on his Pennsylvania estate. If you’re headed outside today for a few precious moments of daylight, be sure to bundle up. And on your next visit to the Museum, stop by to see Winter in our (comfortably heated) American Art galleries.Posted by Jessica Murphy -- source link
