If anyone saw my previous blog topics about the future of fashion and fashion magazines you may have noticed that I mentioned how over the past few years I have noticed less and less models have been gracing the cover and how “so called models” such as Kendall Jenner and reality stars like her sisters the Kardashians have been replacing them and basically putting models out their jobs. So are models actually models anymore, and in a world where bloggers and reality stars taking over the world and are influencing my generation will in another few years’ time will there be no such thing as the supermodel as the term has seemed labelled on everyone these days? Ever since I first got in interested in fashion I always had this crazy dream that I’ll one day be a model. Now looking back, I realised it’s not realistically going to happen. First of all, I’m not tall enough (being just under the minimum height requirement at 5’7 / 169cm) and I’m just painfully plain and average looking. But being a blogger this dream may eventually could be become a reality, with the rise of social media and more and more unknown hidden talent coming though into the industry , are these going to replace the people who once where idolised by the fashion industry and set to dominate fashion covers. The term supermodel was once used to describe the best of the best. The ones who will never be replaced, who will always be remembered. But now I’ve seen people describe Kendall Jenner as a supermodel. No. In my opinion she isn’t an even a model, her family and her family name bought her way to the top. A supermodel Is someone who everyone knows, someone who came out of no where and has suddenly got everyone going crazy for them, their the Kates and twiggy of the world. When I was in hospital my room was plastered with editorials of Kate Moss , Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista the doctor even knew who they were I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t know who Kendell is . Supermodels just have that personality that just make them stand out, make them have that something about them , something that wants people to get to know them more but at the same time they are so relatable . Looking through a recent ELLE article I do still see supermodels having an influence on celebrity culture. It was only just a few days ago that KimK was spotted wearing a similar silver dress Kate Moss wore back in 1993. They say imitation is a form of flattery , I say its just being unoriginal (and lets face it Mossy will slay KK every time , she has nothing on Kate) Don’t steel Kates most iconic look Kim you will just fail hard. Now days I don’t even bat an eyelid at Vogue if a model isn’t on the cover. I don’t know why, I think it’s because as a person who is into fashion and had been invested in it since an early age (and my first Vogue I ever bought had a model on the cover) I feel more connection with models, I look up to the more than celebrities who are more mainstream and I like to separate myself and make myself different to everyone. I’m not going to pretend to like an actress just because everyone else does. I remember writing a mock essay exam question for my GCSE’s about Ali Michael whilst everyone else went for the “typical” role models. It’s not only celebrities that grace the cover, with youtubers, vloggers and bloggers becoming more and more popular I have a feeling more of these will be seen on covers in the near future and going from blogging about shows to actually staring in them and being the face of designer campaigns. I really just want fashion to go back to basics even if its just now and again , I feel like we see more celebrities being idolised by designers for example Justine Bieber and Kendall Jenner in the Calvin Klein adverts ,I’d rather see Kate moss in them again since that was when she got her big break.
