Member Profile for September is Marianne Calhoun, Hairstylist, at The Hair Company!Bio/ Bit of Professional BackgroundMy career as a hairstylist is a dream come true! After 14 years as an Administrator within the field of Human Resources and Payroll, I decided to blend my business background with my passion for beauty & fashion. I graduated from Atlantic Hairstyling Academy in 2013, the same school my brother, Emerson Calhoun, had attended 13 years prior. I am now fortunate enough to work alongside him and our fun banter, positive outlook and genuine love for the industry makes us an unstoppable force!When you hear “Junior Stylist” it often indicates the time you’ve spent working somewhere rather than the skill level you’re dedicated to achieving. I am determined not to let a title define me, as I’m committed to my success as a hairstylist. When it comes to hair, my personal philosophy is that hair is a constant conversation, which is why I invest time in my clients and provide a free, thorough, consultation with every visit, not just the first. Communication is key!Tell us about your business, and how you came up with the idea.I am an entrepreneur at The Hair Company, a L’Oréal Flagship Salon, which is owned and operated by Margaret Henstridge. The Hair Company has 5 Hairstylists, 1 Registered Massage Therapist and an Aesthetician. The Hair Company shares my beliefs that our profession requires us to use our knowledge, experience, as well as our hands to enhance the beauty of every client. Our team is successful because we share ideas, observe one another’s work and exchange ideas freely. I have found that being self-employed provides me the freedom to create the business I’m passionate about, in a way that’s true to me. I’ve always known the importance of being aligned with the right people, and products to enhance my service offerings, no matter what industry I serve.The Hair Company just moved to a new location at 740 McLeod Avenue, which is close to the university and overlooks the beautiful Queen Square Park. Parking is free and the business hours are accommodating to our clientele. Where do you look for inspiration?I keep an eye on fashion trends, celebrity hair, as well as our local downtown Fredericton scene. It helps me prepare and ease my clients through the cut, color and texture changes they would benefit to achieve a desired look. I also, pride myself in providing an engaging, enjoyable and relaxing experience. I have an easy demeanor and an eye for detail. I love finding out my client’s hair desires, then utilizing my resources and education to deliver a quality end product with a solid, satisfaction guarantee.How do you get yourself inspired?My faith, time spent with mentors in the hair industry, and my love of books. I’ve also been inspired by the salon clientele who have been cheering me on, sending in referrals and supporting my business. What a gift! Who are some of your favorite artists in the field?Vivienne Mackinder is my all time favorite artist, as I’m most passionate about hair design. She’s an expert precision cutter and has an eye for designing cuts.Sam Villa is a current favorite, as I’m a new stylist. I had the privilege of attending one of his classes this past April in Halifax, NS. He is a wealth of information on all things “hair”, and is willing to share knowledge, tips and tricks. I utilize his free online education, which allows me to deliver advance techniques to my clients. Win – win for everyone!What project have you worked on that you enjoyed the most and why? I enjoyed volunteering for the burlesque show in 2013 and working alongside some local stylists, Jason McCarthy, and Justin Fudge. They impressed me with their skill set and speed. I also learned the importance of solid prep work in order to achieve a great updo! Do you use Social Media for your business? How has it impacted your business?I just recently started using Social Media for my business and am still learning how to use it more effectively, as I realized it’s the best way to network and promote my services. To date, I created a Facebook group, Hair by Marianne, in order to promote specials and post pictures of my work. I can also be followed on Twitter @vibrantstylist.  As a member of FFC, what do you hope to see the council achieve?Fashion awareness and the collaboration of great talent in all areas of fashion & beauty!  What’s next for you?I am focused right now on growing my business and continuing my education, through advanced classes. I would also like to find some volunteering opportunities to hone my skill set and become more actively involved within the community!
