In the 1700s, two centers for dramatic arts appeared in London: Drury Lane and Covent Garden. Susannah Cibber, Sarah Siddons, and Peg Woffington were among those who found great success on these stages. Cibber was also an accomplished singer, while Siddons honed her skill for tragic performances, earning lasting fame for her Lady Macbeth. Woffington first garnered attention for her role in an Irish production of The Beggar’s Opera. All three gained fame (and occasional notoriety) in an age when it was still difficult for a woman to do so on her own terms.(images from An Account of the Life of that Celebrated Actress, Mrs. Susannah Maria Cibber … (PN2598 .C4 A4 1887, exhibit), James Boaden’s Memoirs of Mrs. Siddons … (PN2598 .S5 B7 Vol. 1, exhibit), and J.
