Here’s a little BLUESDAY inspiration from our Arts of the Islamic World collection, currently on view in Infinite Blue. The smeared appearance of this jar is a testament to the challenges of cobalt’s use as a pigment. During firing, the black outlines were meant to contain the fields of blue, but instead, the color ran, creating an unintentional but ethereal effect. Posted by Rebekah Pollock Vase with Architectural, Figural, and Floral Designs, 19th century. Ceramic; fritware, painted in black, cobalt blue, and green under a transparent glaze.
