kanji-a-day: 1114/2000 JLPT: N1 School Grade: Junior high school This character is a combination of 至 arrive/reach, and 攵 striking hand/coerce. Older forms, however, show that it was initially written with 夂 upturned foot, here in its sense of “visit and stop” rather than 攵. Originally 致 referred to a “person reaching their destination and stopping,” but the miscopying of 夂 as 攵 brought about causative connotations, giving “make someone visit,” and hence “send.” Over time “send” broadened to mean “act/do” in a general sense, and it also occasionally is used to mean “cause.” -- source link
