apiasfrepresent: By Sadia Arshad, APIASF/GMS ScholarHi everyone! My name is Sadia Arshad, and I am a APIASF/GMS 2011 Scholar! I recently graduated with my Master in Public Health (MPH) from Boston University, where I concentrated in social and behavioral sciences and maternal and child health. See, I didn’t originally anticipate earning a MPH back in college or high school. I didn’t even know public health existed until I met someone who had completed a minor in public health during my undergrad at Boston University. I did my own research, talked to some other public health students, and started to explore my own interests. Though I entered college eager to pursue a career in engineering, I always had an interest in health, education, and human behavior. I struggled much in my first year of college navigating systems of higher education between my passions and anticipated plans and realized that I wanted to have more direct influences on the health and education outcomes for people in my community. Switching gears, I made a decision to become a public health and education professional with a focus on diversity in higher education and health education in the (South) Asian American community. Now, I can influence the health and education outcomes for other low-income South Asian, AAPI, and other racially marginalized students. Even though I do not have the capacity to influence many people at once, helping one person at a time is enough to spark change in their own ways. -- source link
