★ Jun. 17, 2019 Kawaguchi-ya, Nagoya: minazuki (the name of the sixth (lunar) month) ——– Sweet adzuki beans on the white ‘uiro’ texture containing a small amount of kudzu (Japanese arrowroot starch). In the conventional shape of a triangle. ——– In the old Japanese calendar, the sixth (lunar) month was called ‘mi-na-zuki’, which apparently means ‘month[zuki] of[na] water[mi]’. The month roughly corresponds to a 30-day period between late June to mid August in the Gregorian calendar. The last day of the month (now, June 30) marks the (nearly) halfway point of the year. On that day, many Shinto shrines traditionally hold a purification rite called 'Nagoshi-no-harae’, which purifies people from impurity/defilement and misfortune they had during the first half of the year. Many people (especially in Kyoto) attend the ritual, praying for the restoration of their purity and for their perfect health during the remaining half of the year. ——– Apparently, it has been customary for people in Kyoto to eat this cake on/around the day of this ritual. (Although, the custom also prevails among people in other parts of Japan these days.
