himabean: Hello friends! (please share this!) I am organizing an event called “Coming Out, Coming Home: South Asian Family Acceptance and LGBTQ Youth” as an intern for SAMHAJ, a program run through NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) NJ. Our main objective is to support South Asian families better care for the LGBTQ+ folk within their families, especially youth. This includes dispelling the misconception that LGBTQ+ identities are mental illnesses and establishing that it is rather the silencing and stigmatizing of youth that can cause mental illnesses. Overall, we just hope that LGBTQ+ folk, their families, and our larger South Asian community benefits from these conservations!!! Coming Out, Coming Home happens on 7pm, April 20th at Rutgers University - New Brunswick, New Jersey (address on flyer). The event is free and open to everyone! You can RSVP here!
