toothy-merpagan: obsidianthunderwolf: peridotdaughterofathena: toothy-merpagan: thespectacularspider-girl: scaredy-ant: 2manyteeth: Fun fact: the reason why a lot of Easter’s symbols and traditions are unrelated to Jesus is because it wasn’t originally a Christian holiday. There are records from as far back as the 8th century about a pagan Germanic festival held in April celebrating Ēostre (or alternatively Ostara) a goddess of springtime. When the Christians moved in and started killing and converting everybody they found it was easier to rebrand holidays than to stop people from celebrating them. It’s possible that Christmas is a more successful example of this habit of theirs (although it may just be a coincidence that it overlaps with Yule) while Halloween -originally Saimhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season- is a much less successful example. This is a lie. All of this is a lie. From the Tumblr user: @breelandwalker “Easter has NOTHING to do with: Ishtar Ostara Pagan holidays A goddess called Eostre (Bede was a speculating idiot and he’s the original source for this nonsense) Easter has EVERYTHING to do with: The Jewish celebration of the Passover seder The Christian celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ Nobody stole our shit. Easter was never pagan to begin with. Rabbit was considered “fish” by the medieval Catholic Church so that people could eat it during the 40 days of Lent, and eggs laid during the Lenten fast were hardboiled for preservation and then eaten during the breaking of the fast on Easter Sunday. That’s why we have bunnies and eggs. Stop conflating Easter with pagan holidays, and get the fuck out of here with that casual anti-semitism. Thank you and good day.” http://www.orthodoxchristianity.net/forum/index.php?topic=60594.0 Is rabbit allowed during Lent? https://www.christianitytoday.com/history/2010/february/how-fast-of-lent-gave-us-easter-eggs.html How the Fast of Lent Gave Us Easter Eggs The links that came with it. Please stop spreading this misinformation so you can get away with demonizing Christianity. Oh boy, those sure are some unbiased sources there. Yeah… That’s what I’m thinking. Id like some scholarly historical sources. Christmas also happens around the same time as the Roman holiday Satrinalia. So, there’s that fun fact. I love that Christians and catholics are so in denial. Lol yes y'all stole your holidays. History has not forgotten. It was a matter of converting the pagans. Because we can’t just let people worship as they please (within reason like human sacrifices? Noooooo not good). Easter does have to do with Passover from what I’ve seen but Christmas is another thing all together -- source link
