mughalshit: Cabinet India or Pakistan (Gujurat or Sindh), Mughal, early-mid 17th century Wood, veneered and inlaid with engraved ivory; brass and iron mounts In the 16th and 17th centuries fall-front cabinets of this design were made in some quantity in the cosmopolitan ports of Gujarat and Sindh, which were much frequented by western traders. In design they were based on the standard European portable cabinet, which was designed to store documents and valuables, acting, in a sense, as a modern-day briefcase. The decoration on this piece, characterised by bold rows of flowering plants, places it firmly in the mid-17th century. -- source link
