joshualunacreations: Media coverage of the Asian American experience is usually limited to California and NYC. So when I moved from northern to southern Virginia, I was not prepared for how “South” the South can get. This isn’t to say the North is less racist than the South, it just manifests differently. In my experience, Northerners put effort into concealing their racism only because they want to be seen as morally superior to the South—despite benefiting from the same racist systems. In the same way we hear more about CA and NY Asian Americans than Southern Asian Americans, we also hear more about East Asians than Southeast Asians. Those multiple layers of erasure mean most people don’t know, for example, there’s a history of Filipinx and Vietnamese communities in LA, TX, VA, FL, etc. The Southern Asian American experience is so erased that most people don’t even imagine Asians living here. This prevents people from acknowledging our unique struggle, but also from understanding how that experience relates to the struggles of Southern Black people or CA/NY Asian Americans. The Asian American experience is inherently diasporic, meaning we end up scattered across the country. Some of us end up in Asian American enclaves, but not all of us do. Regardless of location, Asian Americans are always vulnerable to racism. (I made a comic about that!) https://twitter.com/joshua_luna/status/884835577874481153 Also, if you’re worried about the groundhog, I didn’t trap and relocate it, and learned that’s not the best way to deal with it (it’s also illegal to do that in Virginia, so there’s that). I also didn’t eat it, in case you were wondering. (Please don’t repost or edit my work. Clicking “Share” and liking my page is always appreciated.)
